RB DJ Ware talks about getting the opportunity to play Sunday.

Q: How do you feel about getting a chance to play on offense?

A: It was my goal and I didn’t know what the situation was going to be with any of the other backs. I felt like it was my job to take care of me and go ahead and sign and hope for one of these opportunities like I have this weekend. Now I just have to make the most of it.

Q: How do you feel about playing the Seahawks again?

A: I think about that all the time. I realize that it was a good game last year and I got a chance to get in there and get 13 carries in the fourth quarter. That is productive so I am just trying to lead up to that and continue to follow up with that.

Q: How has practice been this week?

A: It has been about the same. I usually make sure that I help the guys and make sure they don’t get tired. I know everything on offense and I just have to carry it over to the game and have some success.

Q: When you signed in the offseason, what did you think the situation was going to be?

A: I had no idea because I couldn’t really go off anything. We were getting ready to have the lockout and once the lockout came, you really had no clue. I just stayed focused and tried to keep working and keep my nose down and hopefully come out on top with whatever happened.

Q: How much did that show you about the confidence the coaches had in you?

A: It made me feel like they had some confidence in me and that they wanted me back. It is just a great opportunity right now and I just can’t wait to get out there and see what happens.

NFL Injury Reports – Read between the Lines

The principal purpose of the injury report is to ensure there are no hidden injuries, or clubs hiding that players might not be available, and then that player ends up not being able to play and nobody knew about it,” said Greg Aiello, the NFL’s vice president of public relations.

Teams define players as either out, doubtful, questionable, or probable. Doubtful means there is at least a 75 percent chance the player will not play,  questionable is 50-50, and probable is a virtual certainty that the player will be available for normal duty.

So, every week each NFL team submits an injury report to the league office and for public information. What does it all mean ? First off, teams, while required to report injured players rarely report the actual injury the player has for obvious reasons. For example, if a team reports that a player with “bruised ribs ” is probable for the game, that basically paints a bullseye on his ribs and that is where the other team will mostly likely be hitting him. Bruised ribs often translates into a sore back or other type of ailment. So, first rule of thumb is that while the player is injured the report does not necessarily disclose the injury to protect the player.

Next are the players on the injury report who are not necessarily injured, but are certainly unhappy with their playing time or how the organization is using them. From week to week you will find a number of players on the injury report who are making a statement. Something like, you don’t give me the ball enough during the game and you don’t pay me enough for the way you use me, so I am not going to practice during the week, I will just play in the games and show you who is boss. I am not going to name players, but you are smart enough to figure out why for example  a RB in the NFL would not play because of say ” strep throat” in any given week. or why a player will not practice all week  and ride a bike and then suddenly he is listed as probable andwill play on Sunday miraculously. Generally speaking there are a lot of injured egos and damaged wallets on the Injury Report from week to week.

I feel like the injury report is more of suckers report for the oddsmakers and betting lines on the games. Teams prepare all week-long to face the starters. If a guy like Vick isn’t playing, then the guy behind him is running a stream lined version of the Eagles offense anyway.  If a guy like Tuck isn’t playing, then his replacement isn’t changing how Seattle is going to attack the Giants defense.  No team you are at war with in the NFL is going to open the door of his locker room to his opponent and really say, yeah this  guy is banged up here so don’t hit him so hard and that guy wants to be traded so he isn’t practicing, etc.

Read between the lines when you see those reports and be prepared to see the “injured guy” play anyway.  In most circumstances if he suits, he is going to play. If he is in street clothes, it is probably a pretty safe bet that you aren’t going to see him jog into the huddle.

The Problem with Tony Romo is Jerry Jones !

Tony Romo the Hero, Tony Romo the Goat. It just depends on the week, the day or maybe the moment. This guy moves from the Penthouse to the Outhouse and back more times than I can count. With a career 1-4 play-off record and just one wild card win in 7 years, he still draws the full support of his owner Jerry Jones and it looks like the Cowboys will continue to ride him like an elevator, up and down and often stuck in between floors. What I don’t understand is why does he get that kind of cushion in his job. The fans are ready to crucify him, while the owner sits there and vilifies him.

There is nothing wrong with his career stats, he has a lifetime 64.1 completion percentage and he has thrown for almost 18,000 yds and 125 TD’s. He has size, toughness, ability and he has the full support of his front office and his coaches and players. It’s just that Tony finds as many ways to lose as he does to win. His losses or collapses if you will are epic, this latest one against the Detroit Lions is mind-boggling. After a brilliant first half by Romo and with his team up by 24 points in front of the hometown crowd, with 12.5 minutes to go in the game Romo throws 2 pick 6 ‘s and a third interception.  What are you kidding me, all Tony had to do was hand the ball off the rest of the way – or even take a knee.  How does that happen. Why didn’t his own guys just tackle him before he could throw the ball ? Where is the rational behind that, where is the Head Coach, who is calling the plays, where is Brash Owner Jerry Jones.

After 7 years though I think the Cowboys have to start thinking about where to go from here. One and done from the wild card spot doesn’t seem like it should cut it from the NFL’s most valuable franchise. Jerry Jones is an out-spoken owner and self-proclaimed leader. He has built a temple to football in Dallas and it seems like the fans have had enough of the Tony Romo show. It’s not like he has not had the chance to succeed its just that when he gets to the door he seems to flush it down the toilet. I think the jury is in on Romo and they have voted guilty as charged. The problem with Tony Romo is Jerry Jones. He is the guy who keeps betting the franchise on him and doesn’t bring anyone in behind him, making it an all Romo or nothing scenario and robbing the fans of any kind of hope for a different ending.

At some point you have to ask yourself is this the guy who can take us to the promised land ? If the answer keeps coming up no – isn’t it time to make other plans or are we going with the definition of stupidity here – meaning doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.

What do you say Jerry Jones is the elevator going up or down or maybe just stuck between floors ?

In Battle of NY Football Teams – Jets Beating Giants at Debt

Here is an interesting fact that I noticed the other day. There are 4 teams in the NFL with debt to value ratios at 40% or higher. In order from lowest to highest it is the Miami Dolphins at 40%, the Detroit Lions at 43% , the New York Giants at 55% and the New York Jets at a whopping 66%. I am beginning to wonder about Woody Johnson as an NFL team owner and what the plan exactly the plan is for the Jets ?

I certainly understand that a new stadium and each owners share of financing the cost of building a new stadium is going to increase debt. However, there are teams in the league that have built new stadiums that don’t suffer the debt load that the Jets or even the Giants carry at this point in time. For example the Dallas Cowboys who are the highest ranked valued team in the NFL, have a debt to value ratio of just 11%. Remarkably, the community owned  reigning Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers have a debt to value ratio of just 2%. So, success on the field is not tied to the amount of debt a team is carrying or the amount of money they are spending on their facilities or payroll.

The Jets are the 6th ranked team in terms of value this year at $1,144,000,000 dollars. That means at 66% debt the team is carrying a load of $950,400,000. The Giants are the 4th ranked team at $1,182,000,000 dollars. Which means at 55% debt they are carrying a load of $650,100,000 dollars.

With the minor exceptions of the signing of Plaxico Burress and David Baas neither team was able to compete in the free agency market, largely due to salary cap limitations. In case you are wondering the Philadelphia Eagles who were most active in the off-season and in working the salary cap, are the 7th ranked most valued team at $1,119,000,000 with a 16% debt to value ratio and pretty nice digs to play in. No excuses there for Jets and Giants owners to fall back on.

The Giants seem to have done a much better job of selling personal seat licenses (PSL’s) and they are beginning to burn down debt and free up salary cap room. Although, they need to do a better job of maintaining their free agents and keeping their players happy like Osi and soon Tuck but it looks like they are working through it. I would still question General Management and front office decisions about player personnel and I wonder about Jerry Reese’s ability to identify talent and over commitment to draft picks and the skills of their capologist. I also wonder about the extraordinary number of injuries their players suffer from year to year and what is at the root of that.

The question becomes then how did Woody Johnson get himself into his predicament.  Has Woody Johnson in his desperation to become an elite NFL team completely mortgaged the future of the Jets at what is a crucial time in the franchises history. Has Woody drank the  Rex Ryan kool -aid of  big talk and super bowl promises every year nonsense ? Has he over invested in Mark Sanchez as the franchise QB? Did he provide to big of a guaranty to Plaxico Burress who is looking very much like a 34 yr old receiver who has been out of the game for 2 years ? Has he gambled on risky players like Braylon Edwards ?  Why are the Jets not as good as the Giants in selling PSL’s ? Is he functioning with sound front office personnel and talent evaluation, or is he just throwing money at his team and at the stadium in his gamble to win a super bowl ? Their one an only super bowl win was in 1968. They have been to the AFC championship game twice in 09 and 10, but have come up empty and look like a team on downside. So many questions here.

Woody is a billionaire and a successful business man, I am just wondering if he is surrounding himself with the right NFL people.

Weighing in on Sanchez

To be entirely fair it takes time for QB’s to develop and you probably don’t know what you are going to have until about the third year. Well, it is Mark Sanchez’s third year in the league and while he was thrust into a starting role before his time with the Jets, I think he is stock is slipping and I don’t think he will develop much further or be the franchise player the Jets are looking for to take them to the promise land.  I think Sanchez’s NFL skills are limited and he is holding his team back from developing any further.

His career QB numbers are very unexciting and borderline horrible. Through last week he has thrown for 35 touchdowns to go with 38 interceptions and 16 fumbles in 2 plus years. He averages just 6.62 yds a completion and has an avg QB rating 71.0.  He is currently is ranked 28th in the league among 32 QB’s slightly ahead of players like rookie Blaine Gabbert and the ancient mariner Kerry Collins doing fill in work for the injured Peyton Manning.

By comparison Tom Brady threw for 36 touchdown passes last year alone, one more than Sanchez has in his whole career. Top QB’s maintain ratings over 100. They manage the games well, and they find ways to win. Yes the Jets have had some play-off success the last two years, but I don’t think it is because of Mark Sanchez. I think it is because the talent around Sanchez is so good they have managed to survive. I think they have peaked with him at QB and will be spiraling down now. They are entitled to a bad game here and there but they were awful against the Ravens last week and Sanchez’s performance was dismal.

I don’t think you can blame his performance on the Offensive Line or his Receivers. The line is loaded with blue chip talent and he always has had big time receivers to throw to who make ridiculous catches for him. He has Santonio Holmes and Plaxico Burress to throw to who has the wingspan of a Pterodactyl along with Dustin Keller and Derrick Mason. But he can’t seem to find them on the field.

By today’s NFL QB standards he is small and therefore requires wide passing lanes. I don’t think he sees the field well and I don’t think he protects the ball well for the offense and he just isn’t effective enough of the time. He can move well, but it doesn’t help his completion percentages which are a meager 54 per cent in his career. He needs to be over 60 per cent to be effecctive. If you are not a monster athlete, you can still play QB, certainly Phil Simms did an excellent job of managing teams and maintaining high percentage of completions through out in his pro career and even was the winner and MVP of Super Bowl XXI.

This should be the year when it all comes together for Sanchez and instead he looks like a rookie out there and it looks like it is all slipping away. He looks confused and he is putting the ball on the ground. I don’t think his talented team mates can lift him up to their level and I don’t think he can play up.

I am selling Mark Sanchez and I think Rex Ryan if he wants to predict Super Bowls in the future for the Jets, he may have to start looking for other answers at the QB position.

NFL and Bengals fumbling on Simpson

Jerome Simpson  plays on for the Bengals despite the fact that federal investigators seized 8 pounds of marijuana from his house including a package containing 2.5 lbs on delivery to Simpson’s residence. They also seized drug paraphernalia and packaging materials. Again, I am all about innocent until proven guilty, but this player is under federal investigation for drug trafficking. I am pretty sure that violates the morals clause in his contract – and no doubt is in direct conflict with NFL League Drug Policy for Players. Unless the NFL has recently switched to a “smok’em if you got ’em scenario then there is clearly at least an ethical or moral issue here with regard to letting Simpson play on.  I am not judging Simpson here, there are courts for that. I am questioning what statement his employer and his union are making by not at least benching the guy and saying while they support their players they don’t condone this type of alleged behavior or distraction and he will be sitting and watching until it is sorted out.

If I am Jerome Simpson I am playing until told otherwise, I have no problem with that and I think he is doing the right thing under the circumstances. The problem I am having is with the Cincinnati Bengals and the NFL. If this is “normal behavior”  and the Team and league condone it well I guess staying silent on the matter and letting Simpson play is par for the course. If the team or League sees anything wrong with the player having 8 pounds of marijuana in his house then this is the time to weigh in and send a message to anyone in the league who thinks this is OK, that it will not be tolerated.

If the NFL sees fit to punish and suspend Cedric Benson for a legal infraction during the lock-out for which he has already been punished, then why does the NFL take no action against a player who was just caught with 8 pounds of marijuana at his house? No, charges have not been filed, but I don’t hear Simpson denying that it was his house or his weed ?

The Bengals and NFL have fumbled on Simpson unless they are claiming the player surrendered himself and went to the ground untouched and therefore the Bengals get to keep him in the line-up until the investigators turn up the charges.

NYG should cut Brandon Jacobs for comments about fans

Brandon Jacobs was quoted yesterday,  The people outside that want to say they’re fans and don’t believe in  us, I couldn’t care less if they ever believed in us,” Jacobs said, according to the New York Daily News.  “They don’t mean anything to us if they didn’t believe in us. They can  go back and finish living their miserable lives as they’ve been living  and hoping that they lose and whatever.”

I am a huge fan of the game of football, an enormous player advocate and a NY Giants fan, just read my posts. I even stand up for guys like Cedric Benson when I feel the NFL is doing them wrong, but Brandon Jacobs is a fool, he is embarrassing himself, the entire roster of players on the Giants and the NFL. Calling out fans and telling them to go back to their “miserable lives”, and that folks who question the actions and moves of the team in the context of following and rooting for a team according to you, those ” fans don’t mean anything to the team”.

If he is speaking for the Giants as a team, he just about knifed the New York area fans. I have no clue what your point is Brandon other than demeaning the people who pay your fat 25 million dollar contract while you average  3.3 yards a carry, you are ranked a dismal 37th in the league in rushing , you are constantly displaying your interest in boxing on the field in the middle of a football game, siding with your buddy Plaxico against the organization or throwing your helmet in the stands after you get stuffed yet again at the line of scrimmage, because you want to run like a half back instead of a fullback. Well you know what  Brandon we are sick of your miserable play on the field, your attitude and of the stupid comments that come out of your mouth.

You have no clue Brandon Jacobs and you need to go. To play in the NFL is a gift, to be paid ungodly sums of money by the team that employs you is something to be cherished. To compete week after week on the gridiron is a privilege not a right, To have fans embrace you and your plight is something to be earned, not demanded. The entire NFL sport  garnishes 9 billion dollars a year from those               ” miserable fans”.  All that money comes from the fans pockets, so you can do those things. To call out any fan ( if he hasn’t physically assaulted you or threatened you or your family)  is inexcusable. No, not all fans say intelligent things and no they are all not going to line up behind you and root for you either, but they have a right to voice their opinion, without you condemning them to their “miserable lives” if they don’t agree with you or support you 100% of the time.  You on the other hand are a jerk.

It is not your locker room, you are not the team captain and it’s not the players against everyone else.  So who are you speaking for other than yourself. You are a paid employee of the New York Giants and the NFL and the comments you made embarrass you and everyone you represent. You are not rallying anyone to a cause and your “support me or stay at home attitude” is ludicrous, why don’t you stay at home and let’s see what you do with your attitude in the world where we live in, with our meaningless little lives that you have no need for.

I for one have had enough of Brandon Jacobs. Time for him to go off to his miserable life where he clearly has ego issues. He should be fined and benched, better yet take his anemic 3.3 yard  rushing average and cut him. Let the other RB’s of which the Giants have plenty play.

Hey Roger Goodell while you are making this a fan friendly league, why does something like this go unchecked. I think as Commissioner this is the very circumstance you should be weighing in on.

There is only 1 Maurice Jones Drew

There are a lot of good running backs in the NFL, there are a few elite running backs in the NFL, but there is only one Maurice Jones Drew. At 5’7″ and 208 lbs he is the toughest, fastest, beast of a running of a back the NFL has seen since Barry Sanders. His 6th year in the league at 26 years old, he has rushed for over 1,300 hundred yards in each of the last 2 years while adding over 300 yds receiving in each year and piled on 27 touchdowns. He is productive, he plays low to the ground, he has the speed to go with the package and he plays hurt. He grinds out every play until after the whistle, he is impossible to bring down, he will get you yards after the initial contact, more yards after the second and third hit and is always the guy making the tackle if a fumble by someone else goes the other way. He is the consummate professional, and he has the talent and leadership skills to go with the package.

No matter how many times Jacksonville changes quarterbacks or offensive schemes, Jones Drew is there to make something out of nothing and he finds ways to keep his team competitive by carrying the offense around on his back. He is a monster of a player on the field and a team diplomat off the field. There is nothing more the Jaguars could ask of him, he does it all, he says it all and he keeps folks coming to the games and single handedly gets Jaguar Nation pumped up. He is in every sense of the word a franchise player.

Here is the problem I am having though, he is on the tail end of a 5 year contract and he is making short money for carrying that franchise around on his back. He played last year hurt and now he is back on track and surely headed to another pro bowl. Wayne Weaver needs to dig in his pockets and pay that man. MJD is to the Jaguars what Peyton Manning is to the Colts, Tom Brady is to the Patriots, and more than Adrian Peterson is to the Vikings, who is walking around with a 7 year,  100 million dollar contract.  He deserves the big money. It is not his fault the Jags can’t muster up a supporting cast that can take the team the promised land, but without him there is no team.

I say do the right thing by him and the Jacksonville franchise and pay him the big contract NOW!  There is only one MJD, make him a 100 million dollar back. He has made at least that for you and/or upped your franchise value significantly for the years he has been a Jaguar.

Just do it Wayne !

GO MOJO!

Free Cedric Benson

Cedric Benson who has repeatedly been in legal trouble his entire career has a legitimate beef this time both with the NFL and NFLPA and I for one am hoping he prevails. His current 3 game suspension which he is appealing should be lifted immediately without question by the NFL. While, I do not support the “bad behavior” he is guilty of and has served time in jail for, it is clear that this incident he is being suspended for occurred during the four and half month lock-out by the NFL and at time when he was not represented by his union, the NFLPA.

The NFL should not and would not have jurisdiction over locked out players and their behavior during that time period. However, 8 players including Cedric Benson of a total of 33 players who incurred legal problems during the 4 and a half month lock-out were served up to Mr. Goodell and the NFL as part of the settlement agreement. Now, Cedric Benson is facing a 3 game suspension, including docking his salary over a matter that was settled in court and for which he served a jail sentence and for an incident that occurred during the lock-out and at a time when there was no players union.

The NFLPA , ” the union” which disbanded during the lock out and was not representing Mr. Benson during the time period of the incident, has offered him up along with 7 other players to the NFL, “the employers”, who had locked the players out. after the fact, as if either organization had jurisdiction over him and sanctioned him for his actions as part of the settlement agreement. There is no legal basis for the suspension or the betrayal by his union and if he, Mr. Benson is forced to miss games and salary I would think he has a very legitimate claim against both the NFL and NFLPA. Neither body had any say over his behavior during that time period other than local authorities, who made their own case against Mr. Benson.

Again, while I do not condone Benson’s actions, he has been punished in the location of the crime he committed and at a time when he was not a member of the players union nor was he employed by the NFL. This is just a blatant case of over reaching and it is completely inappropriate. Fair is Fair and this is not fair Mr. Goodell.

Free Cedric Benson!

Ranking the NFC week 3

The National Football Conference

So what do you all think of Post Lock-Out football so far ?  Personally, I think if the goal was parity and to shorten careers with knee injuries the NFL is firing on all cylinders. At this point in the season I think pretty much any team in the NFC can beat any other team on any given Sunday. No  one team looks invincible, the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions look good early on, but it is 3 games in and the injury bug hasn’t rattled their cages yet. Detroit has been drafting in the top 3 for the last ten years, so no surprise there.  New Orleans looks very human to me, The Dream Team Eagles look like  The Nightmare Pidgeons  and Andy Reid must be taking stupid pills with his goal line offense.

In the East there is no Beast and  I would look for these teams to beat the living hell out of each other in their division match ups. Look at the Giants – Eagles game this weekend, or the Cowboys v Redskins last night as an indication of things to come. I think just about anyone can come out of the East Division a champion, The injury factor is going to play a big role in who survives, Vick is already a wounded soldier and so is Tony Romo,  but I am going out on a limb here and saying the Giants will take the Crown in the East, they suffrered injuries early and are on the mend. In the North, Green Bay looks very solid as defending Super Bowl Champs, but Detroit will challenge all year-long and should get a play-off spot.  In the South Tampa Bay and New Orleans will slug it out. I think Tampa Bay comes out on top in the end. In the West it’s a battle of the NFC weaker teams and  a below .500 record will probably be good enough to take the division, same as last year, unless the 49er’s can keep it together.

For the most part I think a lot of what you see will be driven by injury. So many key players battling to stay on the field and so many teams struggling with depth and on both sides the ball. I don’t like what the Lock-Out has done for football. I think you can chalk up the poor play and injury laden season to the players being cut off from coaching, trainers and facilities in the off-season. Rookies and free agents are still learning play books for the most part making it hard for them to fill in and/or start in certain circumstances. If I was forced to pick and NFC champion today, I would have say it would be Green Bay. Caution, a lot can go wrong from here on out.

I will give you my view of the AFC tomorrow.

Vick – tim of his own crimes

Michael Vick has no one to blame but himself for getting roughed up and possibly his offensive line and more specifically the guys playing guard on the Eagles. Vick is not your classic pocket passer, his skills are more about dropping back reading the defense and then taking off as a runner and putting the pressure on the defense to stop him. This makes him more of a run first and second pass option, type QB,  and not a pure QB. In essence, the Eagles are running a Wildcat offense and allowing Vick the option of running or passing on every play. The fact that he drops back to survey the field does not make him any less of a runner and more of passer, he is just pausing to consider his options. He only takes the pass play when it is wide open and quite frankly he isn’t that accurate despite the weapons he has in Jackson and Maclin.

Last year, when Vick moved into the starting job, defenses did not prepare for him as run first throw second type QB. This year its crystal clear teams are game planning for him that way. They are defending for Vick as a runner first and playing him like a running back who has the option of throwing the ball. The result is for Vick he is  getting hammered. Three weeks into the season, Vick has a concussion, a severely bruised hand, looks like he has been through a war after each game and he is complaining the referee’s don’t protect him. Well Mr. Vick, you are running back playing QB and you don’t get special treatment because that is how you have decided to approach the game. Just like Maurice Jones Drew or Adrian Peterson don’t get to say, hey ref I think those guys out there on the defense are hitting me to hard, neither do you.  You can’t have it both ways as a running QB. When you run you are going to get hammered, when you drop back defenses have to defend against you as if you are going to take off and run so, you are going to get hit often and hit hard. Referee’s have to call it that way, they don’t know what you are going to do either. Stop blaming them for doing their job correctly.

The problem is at 31 years old, you don’t have the durability you once had and every time you get hit your body hurts more and more. Your not built to play running back in the NFL  anymore than you have the skills to play QB. You are hybrid of the two positions and while it might fly in college it doesn’t work in the NFL. The beatings will continue Mr. Vick and you already look like a guy who is just about done for the season.  Which goes back to my earlier post on this blog. What were the Eagles thinking giving you an 80 million dollar contract and tagging you as franchise player when all you had on your resume this go round was 11 games last year when no teams were prepared to play defense against you. You spoke to soon and they doubled down on you blindly.

Dream Team ? – Keep Dreaming, you are gonna wish it was all a dream after a few more games like the one you just had against the Giants.

Bombasticviews Bombs of the Week

The two videos posted here are prime examples of why athletes need to think before they speak and to consider the consequences of your celebratory actions.

BombasticView will be giving out weekly awards during the NFL season,  called the Bombs of the week

The offensive Bomb of the week goes too – Eli Manning of the New York Giants:

Eli Manning after a Giants win v Rams is discussing the plays that the Giants had put in for new wide receiver Brandon Stokley. Eli talks about Brandon’s “package” or scheme of plays and how it started out small and got big during the middle of the game, meaning his targets opened up in the middle of the field and helped the offense. However, in the real world Eli talking about “someone’s” package and how it grew during the game is something entirely different from football schemes. A lot of people were hearing something very different from what you were saying. Even in my living room where we were watching the game some one is saying no wonder Eli can’t complete a pass, he is busy staring at that guy’s pants. Not that you meant it that way but a lot of people heard it that way. You just don’t sound like a 100 million dollar guy or very intelligent and you’re the guy getting paid to think out there.

The defensive Bomb of the week goes to  Michael Boley of the New York Giants.

So after scooping up the backwards lateral  muffed by St. Louis  Rams Running Back , Michael Boley races 64 yards for the touchdown and then promptly fires the ball at a defenseless dude’s face on the sidelines. Pretty sure if that ball caught him,  it would have done some serious damage to his head. Boley looked like a young Brett Favre on that one, putting his entire body into the throw and he didn’t even give the guy a hey are you ok my bad  – check. It’s ok to be mean and nasty and do your touchdown romp, but firing it at the guys head and then just stomping away well nice Bomb!

Fred Jackson # 22 Buffalo Bills – Respect

Fred Jackson – 2 Games played, 35 rushing attempts for 229 rushing yards, 6.5 yds per carry average and 2 touchdowns.

30-year-old 6’1″ ,215  lbs , 7th year veteran, Buffalo Bills running back Fred Jackson is leading all NFL running backs in total rushing yards and has a lights out 6.5 yd per carry average. The Bills at 2-0 are the surprise Beast of the East and Fred Jackson who is a known quality top-tier back is not getting any love from the front office of the Bills on a contract renegotiation. He is making a paltry 1.75 million this year in the last two years of his contract. He is the 10th highest paid player on the team and I think he deserves a whole lot more respect and sheckles in his pocket.

For comparison purposes Chris Johnson last years top ground gainer is making close to 13 million dollars this year and in 2 games he has 33 rushing attempts for 77 yards and no touchdowns and an average yards per carry of 2.3 yds. So Chris Johnson make $764,705 dollars a game or about$ 19,862 a yard over the first two games. Yes he is the highest paid RB in the game with the lowest output per starting RB in the league.

Fred Jackson is making 1.75 million this year or $102,942 per game or about $899 dollars a yard and he is the top RB by rushing yards over the first two games of the year.

Fred Jackson is a productive RB who had over a 1000 yds rushing in 09 and close to 1000 in ’10 and around 300 passing yds gained to go with it in each of the last 2 years. He has a legitimate shot to eclipse those numbers this year. His play has forced the Bills to think of other ways to try to use 2nd year and first round pick RB CJ Spiller in other ways.

Hey Buffalo Bills you are climbing back to respectability in the NFL on the shoulders of Fred Jackson. He is the consummate professional who works hard and delivers the mail and he has earned the renegotiation. He has the respect of his teammates and he has the attention of all the other RB’s in the league. Look  at what the Vikings did with Adrian Peterson – put your hands in your pockets quietly and pay this guy. He has the whole league paying attention to your team. No there is no passing game without a running game and he is giving you the best running game in the league right now.

Respect

NFL player 8 pounds overweight

Police on Wednesday confiscated a package containing 2.5 pounds of marijuana shipped from California to the home of Bengals wide receiver Jerome Simpson in northern Kentucky.Bengals tackle Anthony Collins also was present at the house, along with a woman who signed for the package.

Police also found 6 more pounds of pot inside the house as well as drug paraphernalia such as “packaging materials, scales and smoking devices,” California Department of Justice spokeswoman Michelle Gregory told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Police detained the players but didn’t arrest them and no charges have been filed.  The case will be addressed Thursday by the Kenton County (Ky.) prosecutor’s office.

“The house was set up as a potential distribution network,” Tommy LaNier, head of the National Marijuana Initiative, told CaliforniaWatch.org, which broke the story.

A spokesman for the Bengals acknowledged the team was aware of the reports but did not offer any other comments. Both players participated in the team’s practice on Wednesday.

Marvin Lewis appeared on XM’s NFL radio on Thursday morning to address the situation.

“I’ve been appraised of the situation for a few days now and unfortunately Anthony’s name got up into it for no reason. It was at Jerome’s house and it’s an investigation that’s going on. He’s cooperating and doing what he can help in the investigation.”

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT 8.5 POUNDS OF MARIJUANA and there were already 6 pounds in the house and ” the house was set-up as a potential distribution network”. If that were me or you we would not be at practice or at work the next day, someone would be reading us our rights and we would be awaiting indictment on federal charges and trying to post bail.

Sorry, I know athletes get special treatment and your innocent until proven guilty – but you don’t  keep 8.5 pounds of weed in your house for personal consumption – that is 136 ounces – 3,808 grams – and depending on if they are moving it in small quantities, fast math says that is about 88,000 dollars of weed street value in that moment in time that they were caught. Who knows how much is being moved through over the course of 12 months. That is a significant amount of weed for anyone, even a couple of football players who are busy playing football.

How can Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis be so obtuse to claim that “Anthony’s name got up in to it for no reason”. Hey Marvin, guess what, Anthony was in Jerome Simpson’s house, where the 6 pounds of weed were while the 2,5 lbs were being delivered”. Sounds like a whole lot of reasons to me Marvin, and sounds like at least two of your players are in a whole lot of trouble. But you already know that and so does everyone else.

People screw up we get that, mistakes are made. However, the preliminary indications here are that this is an ongoing operation and investigation into a trafficking operation. That is not something to just blow off and say people made a mistake. To protect everyone involved  the team, the coach and the individuals should be speaking through counsel or a spokeman and not be making stupid comments to the press. Moreover, isn’t this just a little more important than Deon Grant falling to the ground and grabbing his leg to get a time-out, but Roger Goodell has taken a significant amount of time to deal with” fake injuries”. He has made public statements and forwarded memos to teams and players on the matter this week threatening fines, suspensions, and taking away draft picks.

Where is the league policy on players who are under investigation for drug trafficking. Hello Roger are you there ? Are you listening ? Anybody home in the NFL offices ?

ACL Injury toll mounts – Are you paying attention NFL Owners ?

Definition of ACL injury:

The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a vital ligament for proper movement. ACL injury more commonly causes knee instability than injury to other knee ligaments.  Injuries of the ACL range from mild such as small tears to severe when the ligament is completely torn. There are many ways the ACL can be torn; the most prevalent is when the knee is bent too much toward the back and when it goes too far to the side.Tears in the anterior cruciate ligament often take place when the knee receives a direct impact from the front while the leg is in a stable position, for example a standing football player is tackled sideways when his feet are firmly planted.

How many guys this year have had season ending ACL injuries ? 5 on the NY Giants alone and there are 32 teams in the league. In the James Harrison interview earlier in the year, he pointed out that ACL tears may have a higher incident rate than concussions and head injuries.  He also said that he was being kind by head hunting and going after a players knees. ACL tears are not only often season ending, they are career threatening. I am not saying they are more important than protecting players from head injuries, however, maybe it is time to look at the statistics and begin to think about how to protect the players knees. I am not sure there is any answer to this and it may just be a casualty of the sport. However, what is wrong with a 9 billion dollar a year industry investing a little money in R&D if it will benefit the longevity and safety of the men playing the game.

I am not one for supporting or limiting the way players play the game or how they hit one another or where they make contact. I am all for equipment or other types of protection and players decision on whether or to make use of it. For example, I have read all over about people experimenting with all types of equipment that protect soldiers, hey who knows maybe some of it is relevant. I don’t know if it is practical or not but maybe the NFL should be looking into things like this.

I am wondering how Jonathan Goff, Terrell Thomas, Domenik Hixon and others would feel about some of all that hard-earned NFL money going to better equipment. You obviously cannot completely protect the players from injury, look at what happened this past week to Vick and Manningham. etc., with all the helmet to helmet rules and safety measures put in place.

However, if you can find a way to protect players and reduce the statistics isn’t it worth it ?

Just saying

Vick Concussion – Subject to NFL Safety Rules – Not a team decision

Philadelphia Eagles trainer Rick Burkholder said today that  Michael Vick was “just a little bit off” on concussion tests according to Albert Breer of NFL Network.  He added that Vick was “absolutely fine” on the plane home.

Sorry Rick, that is not how the process works and you do not get to make the call under the NFL safety rules for concussions. The way it works is that Michael Vick for his safety will undergo tests to determine a baseline. These tests will be repeated throughout the week by an independent neurologist, who will be responsible for deciding when it is safe for Michael to return to the field. The coach does not get to make that call, the team trainer doesn’t get to make the call  and Vick himself does not get to make that decision.

These safety rules were put in place to protect the players from long and short term injury. It was the very basis for all the significant rule changes in the NFL over the past couple of years.   Michael Vick took an enormous shot to the head and everyone watching the game saw it. No, it was not a neck injury as the team would like you to believe and maybe the blood came from biting his tongue, but he suffered a concussion. There is no way his head his clear and it is completely irresponsible for the team trainer Rick Burkolder to be making any statements about Vick’s condition, The NFL in its Safety rules took that away from the teams to protect the players. Rick simply should have said it is a head injury and we are following the NFL Safety Rules for Concussions for Michal Vick. End of statement.

Michael Vick is a tremendous athlete, with a huge heart and a team player,  but he took a vicious shot to the head, from friendly fire. He is going to have to go through the process like every other player in the league and to say he is anything other than being evaluated by an independent neurologist for his safety is total bullshit. The Eagles who clearly value their prize athlete should be ashamed of themselves for attempting to report otherwise.

How come Roger Goodell let’s that bullshit fly, but he will fine the players for far less.

The NCAA is an hypocritical org – time to pay student athletes !

I think the NCAA is an hypocritical organization that is a national money-making machine that preys upon the notion that their athletes must maintain amateur status while they ride the backs of those student –  athletes all the way to the bank. I would even venture to guess the NCAA as an organization  probably violates more than a few labor laws in our fine country.

Big time college football programs and the NCAA make insane amounts of money on television packages, bowl games,  suite sales. tickets, corporate sponsorships, alumni giving, merchandise sales, and student ticket sales. Bowl Games alone generate 100’s  of millions of dollars to the NCAA in return for  broadcast rights. The Notre Dame football program by itself generates over 100 million dollars in revenue, with schools like Ohio State, Auburn and Georgia not far behind.

Universities under the auspices of the NCAA operate their football programs similar to professional sports organizations. They spend ridiculous sums of money recruiting high school football players to their programs because the better your team the more your school is going to make.  The part I don’t understand is why if these schools are making so much money in these programs and as a national governing body, how can they say these kids are amateurs. They are not, they are essentially professionals being taken advantage of by their schools in exchange for an athletic scholarship. They don’t really have to go to class or maintain a grade average, the universities have tutors and students who write their papers for them and go to class for them. They design classes for student athletes, like Rocks for Jocks ( geography), Wet Rocks for Jocks  ( oceanography) Far Away Rocks for Jocks ( astronomy) and so on and so on. At the bigger schools these athletes are comped every where they and no rules rarely apply. Cam Newton’s father literally sold him to Auburn for an annual fee. Reggie Bush took cars and homes for his parents to go to USC, Terelle Pryor had 6 sports cars in two years at Ohio State.

Student athletes have to play football and perform on the football field, they are professionals and it’s a job and the football programs generate income for the school and NCAA . In exchange the students get a free pass on their education and the NCAA and the University, cashes all those checks every week, while riding the athletes like stallions trumpeting the horn of amateurism.

I say it s time to pull the covers off the NCAA and the cash cow it has become, while holding down its athletes economically.  It’s an hypocritical organization. The NCAA should pay their athletes who make the NCAA ungodly sums of money. Quite frankly,. the NCAA has become such a contradiction in terms they should not even have the right to judge and proclaim amateurism while running themselves like the mega business college football has become .

Lincoln freed the slaves, NCAA needs to free their athletes.

NFL Team Values Rise Disproportionately to success on the field !

Source : Forbes

The Top 5 Value NFL Franchises :

1) Dallas Cowboys $1.8B

2) Washington Redskins $1.5B

3) New England Patriots $1.4B

4) NY Giants $1.3B

5) NY Jets $1.2B

This is just mind-boggling to me.  Above is a list of the 5 most valuable franchises in the NFL.  The Dallas Cowboys, who are perhaps one of the more mediocre franchises in the League are worth a staggering 1.8 billion dollars. Besides Jerry Jones super-sized ego and  big – mouth to go along with a beautiful stadium this team has medium talent and often a losing , won – loss record. Their last play-off run was in 2007 when they were division champs, but have finished out of the money the last three years.  Last year they were a disappointing 6-10 after a 1-7 start, but none of that has hindered their financial sky-rocket to the most valuable team in the NFL.

How about the number 2 team on the list the Washington Redskins. Owned by the often meddling and heavily criticized Dan Snyder who paid a record 800 million for the Skins in “99, and the following year became the first owner to charge fans to view pre season practices @ 10 dollars a head. The Redskins have not had a play-off appearance since 2007 either. Last year at 6-10 and the year before they finished at 8-8. The Redskins go thru coaches and players like water under a bridge.  Snyder’s mega player deals, like Albert Haynesworth and Donovan McNabb often go bad, but none of it seems to effect the overall franchise value.

Nothing bad to say about the New England Patriots franchise – Their last Super Bowl appearance was a 2007 loss to the New York Giants. They win consistently, well-managed, well coached always contending, great to their fans,  they are totally deserving of the high value tag, and I am from NY so that was not easy to write.

I am going to lump the Giants and Jets together here and just say that it’s New York. The quality of one team is always moving south when the other is heading North. I get that it is New York. I don’t understand why a team like the Giants where the team is heading south, they have been out of the play-offs for the last two years and they may be headed for a last place division finish this year. In the face of all that, their team value rises over ten per cent last year, a bigger increase than any other team in the league.  Adding insult to injury on the fans the Giants are laying their cost of a new stadium off on Personal Seat Licenses. So, all the folks ponying up thousands of dollars for the right to purchase season tickets, get to watch a poorly managed, poorly coached product in their fancy new digs.

This is a sport that seems to reward incompetence.  The worse your record, the more you are worth. Why aren’t team values determined by won lost records and championships ?  Where is the sport in the system. Last time the Dallas Cowboys won the Super Bowl is 1995, and The Washington Redskins in 1991 – those are your big value teams –  give me a break. Something is seriously wrong.

Bradshaw says He and Jacobs best backs in the League – Really ?

From the NY Post :

Ahmad Bradshaw calls out Gilbride

Ahmad Bradshaw just wants the Giants to give him and Brandon Jacobs the damn ball Monday night against the Rams according to Bart Hubbuch of the New York Post.

Asked if he ever wanted to see a replay of Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride calling just seven running plays in the second half of a 28-14 opening loss to the Redskins, Bradshaw waved his hand in disgust.

“I don’t want to see nothing like that,” the veteran Big Blue back sneered. “We love to run the ball, and I thin:k we have the best backs in the league.”

“We ran the ball early and we established it, and kind of got away from it,” Bradshaw said. “The defense saw that we ran the ball early, and they were more in tune with stopping the run than the pass.

“Just being a running back, we know what we can do with the ball in our hands. We know how much it opens the offense up, and it’s a lot better to go with second-and-5 after a run than having to throw when it’s second-and-10.”

—————————————————————————————————————————————————-

Interesting call – out  by a guy who got the ball 13 times for 44 yds. He averaged just under 3.4 yds a carry, got stuffed twice on short yardage situations, let the ball bounce off his hands on a go screen and didn’t throw a block all afternoon.  I think Gilbride deserves some serious criticism as an offensive coordinator, but not for not giving Bradshaw the ball more. Gilbride, when asked why he went to Bradshaw on short yardage calls and not Jacobs, said ” because we tried that before and it didn’t work very well”. Ok then, why don’t you put in your 3rd down package that you practiced all pre season and put in Ware, who catches the ball well out of the backfield and can run the ball. With Ware in the formation or even Scott, everyone one in the world doesn’t know you are running the ball on 3rd and 4th and short,  like you are doing with Bradshaw or Jacobs, and give the play a chance to succeed.  The OC should be able to draw up plays that keep a defense guessing. Gilbride is rarely imaginative or deceptive. and the Giants are all to predictable and easily defended for, that is concisely what Gilbride should be criticized for.

I would agree with AB that the Giants run the ball well at times and that is probably the strength of their game, however, I don’t think by any stretch of anyone’s imagination that Bradshaw and Jacoobs are the best backs in the league, quite frankly neither one is even in the top ten to fifteen in the league. I think you have to mention the following backs before either one of those two even enter the conversation, Maurice Jones Drew, Ray Rice, Chris Johnson, Adrian Peterson, Arian Foster, Steven Jackson, Frank Gore, Michael Turner, Peyton Hillis, Rashard Mendenhall, Darren McFadden, Matt Forte, LeSean McCoy, maybe even, Cedric Benson, Knowshon Moreno or Reggie Bush.  As a matter of fact the more I think about it, I don’t think Bradshaw or Jacobs could even muster a vote as a top back in the NFL.

Reviewing the film of the game the Giants never established the running game and the defense easily stuffed the Giants running game all afternoon – the Giants had a mere 75 yds on 20 carries all day, that is hardly what I call controlling the line of scrimmage, or the running backs exploding for long yardage. It’s one thing to be confident, it’s another to be entirely clueless.  Bradshaw’s statement’s concerning the quality of  Giants running game and level of the RB’s on the team is indicative of how confused this team really is.

In loss, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton looks legit – Mocking The Draft

In loss, Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton looks legit – Mocking The Draft.

Talking Cam Newton

There was an enormous amount of debate on Cam Newton prior to his being tagged by Carolina as their first pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.  The naysayers had him pegged as a pure scrambler with little or no throwing accuracy and not enough intelligence to grasp the intricacies of the NFL game. The Pro Cams had him out there as a stellar athlete with a strong-arm and can’t miss qualities across the board. The truth is the jury is still out on Cam Newton with the results of his first game on the table. I personally think it is way to early in the game to start talking about him in the same sentence as Marino, Brady, Elway, Namath and Manning, even though he did throw for more yards than those guys did in their pro debuts. However, he certainly put up some numbers and gained some supporters and made a lot of fantasy football guys very happy, his 110.4 passer rating didn’t suck either.

I think he did a good job under pressure, he made some nice reads and he threw some nice balls, Steve Smith was 10yds behind the defender on his first TD pass.  On the second TD pass he made a nice throw put the ball where Smith could catch it and Smith made a nice play on the ball. I just don’t think it means anything other than he threw for 422 yds in a loss. There are no prizes for second place and no game balls for losers – it doesn’t matter if you look good losing – you are still a loser. One loss does not make his season, but let’s see how he does as he moves through his schedule.

Cam was a stellar 24-37 passing for 422 yards ( probably 12 more yards then Eli Manning will throw for in his 3 games this year) with 2 TD passes and 1 rushing TD  he and the Panthers lost the game so he is 0-1. He had a monster debut for all the media swirling around him, but the reality is this is the NFL and the Panthers lost to the Cardinals in week one. Yes he was involved in all 3 TD’s for his offense and he kept them in the game but he wasn’t playing the super bowl champion Green Bay Packers – who he gets to face this week.

I for one am not sold on Cam Newton after 1 game in which he racked up the passing yards, kept his composure, but missed out on the win. How will he respond if he takes a beating this week from Green Bay ? I am actually selling on Cam for now – I think it is going to be a long and losing season for the Panthers and I don’t see a lot of support for him or wins coming his way. He is a big talented athlete, I will give you that, but he is a long road from a success story just yet.  In truth, he does remind me a little of a Manning, not Peyton but Archie Manning. He was a decent QB on crappy teams for his entire career. What made Archie famous were his sons who wear super bowl rings, not his career. Maybe Cam will have a big career and produce talented offspring, like Fig or Apple or Cherry Newton.

I also didn’t care for the TD dance which I have provided in the video, one of the worst I have seen in a long time. Not great for a guy who had so much experience in the end zone in college. For now I am selling on Cam, but I could be very wrong on this guy, I hope so …. What do you think

I included the highlights for your review.

Giants are a faceless team without identity or leadership

The problem with the New York Giants runs from the GM and Coach to the last man on the 53 man roster, it is a team without an identity and totally void of leadership.  This is a group comprised of a weak GM an out of sync Coach and 53 individuals micro –  managing their careers, it is not a team and they stand no chance. Let’s break it down.

Jerry Reese  –  he is just not a good talent evaluator, has no ability to make a trade, and is over committed to his draft choices. Strike three he needs to go. He got lucky in 07 and has taken the team on a death spiral since then. Out of the play-offs for two years and now headed for a third straight year and possible last place division finish. Yes injuries play a role, however, they do so on every team in the league. Maybe he needs to figure out why he has so many to deal with every year. He has wrecked the roster with his inability  to be forward thinking. creative and performed poorly in the draft and most importantly is totally unreliable with his players. Classic example is the current feud with Osi, his failure to secure Smith and Boss in favor of  keeping Bradshaw on a fat contract when no one else in the league wanted him. His busting up of the offensive line, letting Seubert and O Hara go, instead of taking the year to transition was a very bad mistake and sent a bad message to the team. He has constructed a weak roster with no depth and he has managed to shake the confidence of his players in contract negotiations, which was never a problem before he came on the scene. How on earth the Giants have cap issues is beyond me, but it is obvious none of the players are willing to “take one (or a little less) for the team”.  For all the reasons above I think he needs to go.

Tom Coughlin – “How can I lead when no one will follow” had to have TC in mind when someone made that statement.  One of the most unimaginative, boring, confused looking and uninspiring coaches in the NFL. What were the Owners thinking when they gave him a contract extension. He has no feel for the games the pulse of his team and no control of his clubhouse. The Players don’t even talk to him or listen to him. He is out there talking to himself and he doesn’t even understand what he is saying. I am not sure what he is doing out there, other head coaches call the offensive plays or the defensive schemes, he does neither. He has a terrible offensive coordinator in Gilbride,  but that’s on Coughlin. He just waves his arms in the air, throws his chewing gum and looks like a guy who can’t find his way to class on the first day of school. Quite frankly, it’s embarrassing.  He is decent on the challenge call, but he needs to challenge on the field with his players not his handkerchief. He has to go and now would be a good time.

Eli Manning is not a leader, he is an organization man and a serviceable QB when he is at his best. By his own admission, he hits the mute button when the criticism rises and is not going to speak out and be  motivational or controversial and will not take a position for a team-mate. This was never more evident than the recent snub of ex team-mate Plaxico Burress, who made Eli look good as a QB or in his failure to attract players to his off-season work – outs, the turn out was pathetic. The players don’t look to Eli as a leader and the offense reflects that. QB’s by virtue of their position have to be team leaders, Eli as a team Captain who fails to fill this role  . This is truly his greatest flaw as a QB, he is robot like and uninspiring, he is vanilla, when the Giants need Heath Bar Crunch.

Jacobs and Bradshaw are simply not team leaders.

Justin Tuck – Great player, great guy, but not the force in the locker room even though he tries and I give him all the credit for that. However, he can’t control Osi and all the problems Osi brings to the table, or Antrel Rolle’s mouth or the all the stupid penalies these guys take, which demonstrates their lack of discipline.

The defense and in particular the linebackers used to be the heart and soul of the Giants organization. It always had great leadership – now its the flavor of the week and how bad did the secondary get scorched ( 305 yds to Rex Grossman and the worst offense in the league is inexcusable)  or how many big plays did the Defense give up this week, yes they get their fair share of sacks, but they hardly play together as a unit.

Special Teams – can’t even comment how bad an area this is for the team. Every week is an adventure in futility. Maybe it’s because they never replaced a guy like David Tyree who was a leader and special teams monster – hey some guys even make the Pro Bowl from the special teams.

Talent is not the issue on this team – lack of leadership is the problem and will continue to be under the present scenario.

Even in the NFL – Shit Happens

This is priceless. Jaws one of the most buttoned down announcers in the NFL let’s the ” Shit” fly in the middle of a play call on Monday Night Football. I had the pleasure of watching and quite frankly was not the slightest bit offended. I am sure though all the parents of the underage watching are up in arms. Hey this is football, “Shit Happens” and it did. I say no harm no foul and Jaws should not have been required to apologize, but I get it, it is national TV. I  don’t think Roger Goodell should be allowed to weigh in on this one, and I am praying that James Harrison will not offer to put out the fire in his previously described method. GO JAWS !

Injuries continue to dominate  the NFL News- Denver has four guys being MRI’ed today including Champ Bailey and Knowshon Moreno. Willie Colon of Pittsburgh is on IR, Dan Koppen C for New England breaks  hisankle, St. Louis – Steven Jackson has a hammy, Amendola has a dislocated elbow, Justin Tuck is nursing a sore neck,  Osi Umenyora is on the last leg of the tour de france and may never see the field for the Giants, and on and on. All those guys who thought they were done when the rosters were cut are now rotating up through practice squads. One mans loss is another ones gain.

What’s up with Eli Manning ? After declaring himself one of the elite QB’s in the league, he gets outplayed by Rex Grossman, who has been called one of the D’ Lete QB’s in the league for several years now. Eli now has thrown an interception for a TD and btw Kareem McKenzie did miss the chop block but Eli put that ball in Ryan Kerrigans reach, with a full frontal view of the guy.

Random Saturday Night Thoughts

Adrian Peterson signed 7-year, $96 million deal that could be worth $100 million w/ escalators. Includes $32 mill guaranteed, $4 mill injury guaranty. – Couple of thoughts charging through my head here. Those are sick numbers for Mr. Peterson. In the past only quarterbacks have approached 100 million dollar deals, now a RB joins the century club. What do you call Adrian Peterson with a 100 million dollar contract, MR. PETERSON.  I am impressed that the Vikings got this done in advance of Peterson’s free agency, they obviously made up their minds that they were not going to leave anything to the market or create any question in Peterson’s mind that he is there man.  Now let’s see if they made a good decision and let’s see if he rewards them. The other thing the Vikings decided is the Mr. Peterson sells tickets, so they made a business decision for the franchise as well. Nicely done and quietly done.

South Carolina v Georgia – Not much of a first half, but once it going it was a barn burner. South Carolina is ranked 12 th in the nation and has some stud players including a RB in Lattimore. Spurrier loves to take chances as a head coach and did not disappoint on 4th down or with a fake punt. Georgia put up a great fight and I almost feel bad for them at 0-2. They are loaded with young talent at WR and along the defensive line, Probably a year away but almost took it to South Carolina this afternoon. Final score 45-42 and a great game to watch, hats off to both teams. Georgia do not fire Mark Richt, he will get it going in the right direction for the Bulldogs !

Penn State v. Alabama – I watched this game as I have my eye on a certain prospect on the Penn State team. Penn State lost miserably. I have to say the sight of Joe Paterno sitting in the sky booth watching his team flounder was painful to watch. Joe, 45 years as the Head Coach is legendary, spectacular and beyond words. However, at this point in the game, are you really doing the University any favors by holding on to the job and standing in the way of another young coach who could take over the program like you did once upon a time.

Danny Ware and the Redskins –  The night before the Giants game and B.I.G. clients Danny Ware’s season opener, I am hoping that the New York Giants see the wisdom in getting this talented young man into their running game. I believe that he can run the ball explosively, catch passes out of the backfield and block better than any of the other backs on the team. The Giants are going into the season banged up on the defensive side of the ball and thin at WR and TE. They have a strong running game, they need to use it to control the clock, set up the passing game and keep their defense off the field. I believe Ware brings a lot to the table, and I am hoping the Giants find a way to work him in with Jacobs and Bradshaw. I think he will reward the team and become an important contributor given the opportunity. Let’s see what happens tomorrow.  Unleash the Beast – Let Danny Run !
